Recruiting And Training
Expert: Look at Persona
Personality can be used to select and train employees, according to one
psychologist and author on the topic. "Personality is real, and it determines the careers of individuals and
the fate of organizations," said Robert Hogan of Hogan Assessment Systems here. He links personality characteristics
to success or failure in the workplace. "Leadership and managerial performance are a direct function of a
person's personality, and, in turn, they directly influence the effectiveness of organizations," he said.
Mr. Hogan has created the Hogan Personality Inventory, which predicts how individuals will perform in a job on
a day-to-day basis. He said 25 years of data show that the inventory predicts job performance.
According to information on the Hogan Assessment Systems website, "The HPI contains items that are keyed true
and false. The items have been carefully reviewed for invasive or intrusive content and to ensure the inventory
has no adverse impact on race/ethnicity or gender. The total completion time is 15 to 20 minutes with a fourth-grade
reading level. "The HPI is based on socio-analytic theory. Within this context, getting along with and getting
ahead of others become dominant themes in social life. The seven scales of the HPI capture key behavioral tendencies
relevant to these life themes."
Another test is the Hogan Development Survey, which assesses 11 patterns of behavior that can derail a manager's
career.
