COFI Up in 2004

SAN FRANCISCO--The Eleventh Federal Home Loan District Cost of Funds Index for the first time since 2000 has ended the year higher than when it was at the conclusion of the previous year.

For December 2003, COFI was 1.902%. The index then spent the next five months continuing its decline, until it reached bottom in May, at 1.708%. In December 2004, the index was 2.118%.

In seven months, the index has gained 40 basis points, which is relatively flat given how fast the index fell. The current index is the highest it has been since June 2003. COFI's most recent peak was in December 2000, at 5.617%.
